These buttery soft homemade biscuits are so simple to make, never buy store bought biscuits again. They are made with only 6 common ingredients, which almost everyone already has on hand. These biscuits are a tasty treat on a cold winter’s day. Top them with creamy savory sausage gravy or smother them with butter and jam. See my recipe for Savory Sausage Gravy. Bite into pillowy soft flaky layers with a delicate slight crisped top, so delightful and lovely.

How to Make These Easy Homemade Biscuits

Preheat oven to 425F. Line a cookie sheet with nonstick parchment paper.

Optional: Chill 6 Tablespoons of unsalted butter in the freezer for about 15 minutes prior to making this recipe. Very cold butter works best when cutting into flour. If choosing not to freeze, keeping the butter in the fridge until ready to use will work just as well.

Flour, baking powder, sugar, salt

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Mix well.

Add butter to flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or the tines of a fork, cut the butter into the mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbles.

Make a well in the center of the mixture. Add milk and stir until just combined. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead the dough with your hands for 1-2 minutes. If dough becomes too sticky, add in a little flour.

Fold over biscuit dough

Once the dough is kneaded, fold dough in half and flatten layers slightly together. Turn the dough 90 degrees and repeat with folding and flattening. Repeat 4-5 times. Be careful to not over work the dough.

Cut out biscuits

Flatten the dough using your hands to about 1 inch thickness. Using a biscuit cutter or top of a drinking glass, cut out biscuits. Try to make close cuts as much as possible. Place biscuits on prepared cookie sheet. Gather remaining dough scraps, rework the dough together. Flatten to approximately 1 inch thickness. Continue to cut out biscuits until all the dough is used. Should get approximately 6-8 biscuits.

Cut out biscuits

Bake biscuits in preheated oven at 425F for 12 minutes or until light golden brown.

Melted butter brushed over top of warm biscuits

Brush biscuits with melted salted butter immedately after taking out of oven for an added touch. If you have a sweet tooth like my husband does, drizzle a little honey on top as well.
